Background of the Study

Zoonotic diseases are infections that are transmitted between animals and humans, and they represent a significant threat to public health globally. These diseases, which include rabies, anthrax, and avian influenza, can cause widespread morbidity and mortality, particularly in regions with close interactions between humans and animals. Nurses, as healthcare providers, play a crucial role in preventing and controlling the spread of zoonotic diseases. Their knowledge of these diseases and the preventive measures required, such as vaccination, hygiene practices, and patient education, can significantly reduce the risks associated with zoonotic infections.

Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital is a major healthcare facility that serves as a teaching and referral hospital in the region. Given the agricultural nature of the area, there is a higher risk of zoonotic disease transmission, making it essential for nurses to be well-versed in the prevention and control of these diseases. This study aims to assess the impact of nurses' knowledge of zoonotic diseases on preventive healthcare at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital, with a focus on their awareness, practices, and ability to educate the public.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant risk posed by zoonotic diseases, the level of knowledge among nurses regarding these diseases and their role in prevention remains inadequately explored. There is concern that a lack of awareness and understanding of zoonotic diseases among nurses may contribute to the ineffective implementation of preventive measures, increasing the risk of disease transmission. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge of nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital regarding zoonotic diseases and examine the impact of this knowledge on preventive healthcare practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital regarding zoonotic diseases.
  2. To evaluate the role of nurses in preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases in the hospital and the community.
  3. To identify barriers to effective zoonotic disease prevention and provide recommendations for improving nurses' knowledge and practices.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital regarding zoonotic diseases?
  2. How do nurses contribute to the prevention of zoonotic diseases at the hospital and in the community?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in preventing zoonotic diseases, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital have adequate knowledge of zoonotic diseases and preventive practices.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of zoonotic diseases and the effectiveness of preventive healthcare measures.
  3. Barriers such as lack of training and resources negatively affect the ability of nurses to prevent zoonotic diseases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses working in the infectious diseases, emergency, and general medical units of Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential response bias and the inability to generalize findings beyond this specific hospital.

Definition of Terms

  • Zoonotic Diseases: Infectious diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans.
  • Preventive Healthcare: Measures taken to prevent the spread of diseases, including vaccination, hygiene practices, and public education.
  • Nurses' Role: The active involvement of nurses in educating patients, implementing preventive measures, and responding to zoonotic disease outbreaks.
