Background of the Study
Zoonotic diseases are infections that are transmitted between animals and humans, and they represent a significant threat to public health globally. These diseases, which include rabies, anthrax, and avian influenza, can cause widespread morbidity and mortality, particularly in regions with close interactions between humans and animals. Nurses, as healthcare providers, play a crucial role in preventing and controlling the spread of zoonotic diseases. Their knowledge of these diseases and the preventive measures required, such as vaccination, hygiene practices, and patient education, can significantly reduce the risks associated with zoonotic infections.
Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital is a major healthcare facility that serves as a teaching and referral hospital in the region. Given the agricultural nature of the area, there is a higher risk of zoonotic disease transmission, making it essential for nurses to be well-versed in the prevention and control of these diseases. This study aims to assess the impact of nurses' knowledge of zoonotic diseases on preventive healthcare at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital, with a focus on their awareness, practices, and ability to educate the public.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant risk posed by zoonotic diseases, the level of knowledge among nurses regarding these diseases and their role in prevention remains inadequately explored. There is concern that a lack of awareness and understanding of zoonotic diseases among nurses may contribute to the ineffective implementation of preventive measures, increasing the risk of disease transmission. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge of nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital regarding zoonotic diseases and examine the impact of this knowledge on preventive healthcare practices.
